Livestock Laboratory Systems

Livestock Laboratory Systems

Veterinary diagnostic laboratory infrastructure for reference labs and field disease surveillance.

Early laboratory diagnosis is the difference between a contained outbreak and a national emergency.

In 2001, the UK FMD outbreak cost £8 billion — a disease detectable by a field rapid test in 15 minutes. In Africa, where laboratory capacity is far more limited and disease surveillance infrastructure is thin, outbreaks can spread across national borders before a confirmed diagnosis is even reached. Jos•Hansen supplies HORIBA Medical and Balio Diagnostics analysers for veterinary reference laboratories, and IDEXX lateral flow rapid tests for field-level point-of-care diagnosis — giving government veterinary departments and commercial producers the tools to detect, confirm and respond to priority livestock diseases before they become emergencies.

Automated haematology and biochemistry for veterinary reference laboratories.

HORIBA Medical and Balio Diagnostics analysers deliver clinical automation standards matched to human reference labs — applied to veterinary reference ranges. Complete blood counts, white cell differentials, liver enzyme panels and electrolyte profiles are processed at 200+ samples per hour, with species-specific reference ranges pre-loaded for cattle, sheep, goats, horses and poultry. Jos•Hansen installs, validates and maintains these systems for government veterinary labs and university teaching hospitals.

Rapid lateral flow testing for field-level outbreak response.

When a field veterinarian suspects FMD, brucellosis or PPR, they cannot wait 48 hours for a laboratory result. IDEXX lateral flow assays deliver a confirmed result in 15–20 minutes from nasal swab, blood or milk — at the animal side, without a laboratory or power supply. Jos•Hansen trains veterinary field staff in these assays as part of government disease surveillance programmes across East and Southern Africa.

Laboratory system design, installation and validation.

Jos•Hansen designs complete veterinary reference laboratories from initial specification through equipment selection, procurement, installation and method validation. We provide SOPs, staff training and ISO 17025 documentation support — building laboratories that meet government accreditation requirements. A well-designed veterinary reference lab is the anchor of a national disease surveillance system.

What laboratory capacity does for animal health systems.

A functioning veterinary laboratory is the anchor of disease surveillance, treatment decision-making and vaccination programme evaluation — the infrastructure everything else depends on.

Field-level point-of-care testing

IDEXX lateral flow assays place confirmed diagnosis in the hands of the field veterinarian — eliminating sample transport delays and enabling immediate outbreak response when every hour determines how far a disease spreads.

Laboratory automation for high throughput

Government veterinary labs processing hundreds of samples daily require automation. HORIBA analysers eliminate manual pipetting and reduce per-test costs by up to 60% compared to manual biochemistry methods.

Zoonotic surveillance capability

Our rapid test portfolio covers brucellosis, FMD and other zoonotic priority diseases — supporting One Health surveillance programmes that protect both animal and human populations within the same diagnostic framework.

Capacity building and SOP documentation

Every system installation includes operator training, troubleshooting guides and SOP documentation in formats accepted by national regulatory authorities — building sustainable local laboratory competency.

Diagnostic performance benchmarks.

These are the figures that define a high-performing veterinary laboratory — the standards Jos•Hansen-designed and installed systems are engineered and validated to achieve.
