Waste Management Systems
Municipal, hospital and industrial waste collection, recycling equipment and biogas systems for sustainable waste stream management.
Africa generates 125 million tonnes of solid waste annually, with less than 4% formally recycled.
Waste management in sub-Saharan Africa is at a critical inflection point. Rapid urbanisation is generating waste volumes that overwhelm infrastructure built for a fraction of current population, creating open dumpsites that contaminate groundwater, generate methane emissions and expose communities to disease vectors. At the same time, the organic fraction of African waste streams represents an enormous untapped resource for biogas and compost production. Jos•Hansen delivers the full waste management infrastructure chain from segregation and collection systems through recycling and sorting equipment to biogas conversion technology, enabling municipalities, health facilities and industrial operators to manage waste streams sustainably and convert them into energy and material resources.
Segregation at source is the prerequisite for any recycling programme.
Mixed waste cannot be effectively recycled regardless of downstream sorting technology. Jos•Hansen waste segregation systems provide colour-coded containerisation, labelling and training that separates waste into organic, recyclable, general and hazardous fractions at the point of generation. Healthcare waste programmes meet WHO standards, separating sharps, infectious, pharmaceutical and general waste. Municipal programmes achieve contamination rates below 20% within two collection cycles when combined with community training.
Recycling equipment converts waste fractions into marketable materials.
Mechanical sorting tables, magnetic separators, eddy current separators and optical sorting systems separate mixed recyclable streams into clean, marketable fractions of PET plastic, HDPE, aluminium, steel and paper. Balers and compactors reduce volume by 10-15:1, cutting transport costs and enabling material storage until sufficient volume accumulates for offtake. Jos•Hansen recycling line configurations scale from single-machine community centres to full mechanical biological treatment installations for municipal waste authorities.

Biogas digesters convert organic waste into energy and fertiliser.
The organic fraction of African municipal waste is digestible in anaerobic biogas systems that generate combustible biogas and nutrient-rich digestate in a closed system without odour. Biogas replaces LPG and firewood for cooking and heating at health facilities, schools and community installations, reducing fuel costs by 60-80% versus commercial LPG supply. Jos•Hansen biogas systems range from 2 m3 household units to 500 m3 community and institutional digesters, with construction options matched to available skills and maintenance capability.
Cold chain infrastructure built for African realities.
Unreliable power, rough roads, extreme ambient temperatures and remote last-mile locations are not exceptional conditions in Africa — they are normal. Our cold chain portfolio is engineered for all of them.
WHO healthcare waste compliance
Hospital waste segregation and containment systems meet WHO standards, reducing infection risk to staff, patients and waste handlers.
Revenue from recyclables
Clean segregated recyclable fractions generate income from offtake agreements, partially or fully recovering the cost of collection infrastructure.
Energy from organic waste
Biogas systems deliver 60-80% fuel cost savings at health facilities and community installations by replacing commercial LPG with renewable biogas.
Reduced landfill and GHG
Diverting organic waste from open dumpsites eliminates methane generation 84 times more potent than CO2 over a 20-year period.
Cold chain performance in numbers.
Every product in our cold chain portfolio is validated against WHO/UNICEF standards — these are the performance benchmarks that define what that means in practice.
Fuel cost reduction when biogas from organic waste replaces commercial LPG supply for cooking and heating at health facilities and institutional kitchens
Volume reduction ratio of baling and compaction equipment, cutting transport costs and enabling recyclable accumulation before offtake from remote sites
Maximum contamination rate in household recyclable streams within two collection cycles with Jos•Hansen colour-coded segregation and training programmes
Collection, recycling and energy recovery from waste.
Segregated waste collection systems, mechanical recycling and sorting equipment, and biogas digesters convert waste from an environmental liability into recoverable materials and renewable energy.
Global manufacturers. African execution.
