Seed & Planting Material

Seed & Planting Material

Certified improved seed varieties and quality planting material matched to African crop systems and market requirements.

Seed selection is the highest-leverage agronomic decision a farmer makes each season.

Improved varieties consistently outperform unimproved local seed by 50–80% across staple crops in East Africa — yet the majority of smallholder farmers still plant back saved seed, limiting their access to the disease resistance, drought tolerance and market traits that modern plant breeding has delivered. The barrier is not awareness but access: certified improved seed is simply not consistently available in rural distribution networks. Jos•Hansen works with principal seed companies to close this distribution gap — supplying certified improved varieties of staple crops, vegetables and industrial crops through agrodealer networks and directly to commercial producers, with planting material traceability and quality guarantees.

Certified improved varieties deliver consistent yield and disease resistance.

Certified seed from accredited breeders carries a verified germination rate, varietal purity guarantee and phytosanitary clearance — ensuring that the performance traits documented in field trials are delivered in the farmer's field. Jos•Hansen sources from accredited seed companies and maintains cold chain integrity throughout the distribution process, preserving germination rates from warehouse to agrodealer shelf.

Tissue culture planting material provides a disease-free crop foundation.

Banana Xanthomonas wilt, sugarcane mosaic virus and sweet potato virus disease are systemic pathogens transmitted through planting material — making the planting material source the most critical disease management decision in perennial crop production. Our tissue culture planting material programmes supply accredited, pathogen-tested plantlets through certified nurseries, establishing clean fields that out-produce traditionally propagated material for 3–5 seasons before replanting.

01

Tissue processing

Automated dehydration, clearing and paraffin infiltration of biopsy specimens — replacing overnight manual processing with consistent, walk-away cycles.

02

Microtoming

Precision sectioning of paraffin-embedded tissue blocks to 3–5 micron thickness — the critical step for pathologist interpretation of cellular architecture.

03

Automated staining

Haematoxylin and eosin plus special stains applied under automated, reproducible conditions — eliminating staining variability that compromises diagnostic accuracy.

Variety selection matched to market requirements, not just yield.

African export horticultural buyers specify variety, size grade, Brix level and shelf life — criteria that many locally available seed varieties do not consistently meet. Jos•Hansen agronomists match variety selection to the specific market channel and contract specification of each farming operation, converting seed choice into a commercial positioning decision. Selecting the right variety for your buyer is as important as selecting the highest-yielding variety for your soil.

More than analysers. A functioning laboratory.

Equipment alone does not make a laboratory work. Reagent supply, engineer support, accreditation documentation and staff competency all determine whether results are produced — and trusted.

Laboratory design and commissioning

We design and commission complete laboratory environments — from single benchtop analysers for district hospitals to multi-instrument automated lines for national referral facilities — including workflow planning and utilities specification.

HORIBA-certified field engineers

Our biomedical engineers are factory-trained by HORIBA Medical and Leica Biosystems. Preventive maintenance, calibration, corrective repairs and application support are delivered by certified personnel, not general-purpose technicians.

In-country reagent supply and cold chain

Jos•Hansen manages importation, customs clearance, storage and distribution of HORIBA, LKL and Leica reagents across East Africa — with temperature-controlled logistics for cold-chain products and local buffer stock to prevent stock-outs.

ISO 15189 accreditation support

We provide gap analysis, QMS documentation templates, equipment validation records and ongoing QC data review to support laboratories pursuing or maintaining ISO 15189 accreditation — the international standard for medical laboratory quality.

Performance you can measure.

Every analyser we supply is specified and validated against published performance data. These are the figures your laboratory manager and clinical governance team will hold the system to.
